Space Odyssey: mapping deforestation from out of space

Story
At Barry Callebaut we have the ambitious target of being carbon and forest positive by 2025. To help us achieve this, we have partnered with experts in this field to develop a unique project which uses artificial intelligence, remote sensing and the newest methodology to classify landscapes.

This year, we teamed up with the EcoVision Lab of ETH Zurich (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology)  to jointly develop a satellite based system that can monitor land use change and deforestation. This tool is the first of its kind looking to implement such an approach at a large scale, automatically. Once finalized, we will make the methodology publicly available. Most importantly, it will allow us to hold our suppliers accountable at a different level.

Check out our video with Oliver von Hagen, Director of Global Ingredients Sustainability and Pilots, and, Dr Jan Dirk Wegner, Founder and Head, EcoVision Lab, ETH.
