Nuts sustainability programme
Our ambition
At La Morella Nuts, we have a longstanding history of environmentally-friendly production and we keep on working to improve the impact of our activities. Being part of Barry Callebaut, we are strongly committed to the Forever Chocolate ambition:
Sustainable sourcing
1. Sustainable Ingredients
Everything starts with how our raw materials (nuts and other ingredients) are grown. Indeed, agriculture has a big impact on water usage, greenhouse gas emissions and biodiversity, among other topics. In 2025, 100% of our ingredients will be verified sustainable, meaning they can be enjoyed by future generations, forever. This means that they are produced while ensuring regard for a biodiverse environment and the farming communities we and our suppliers work with.
Today, 34% of the ingredients we buy is verified sustainable. It involves an external party verifying the production practices to guarantee the producers comply with specific certifications or verifications schemes. For example, the palm oil we use is RSPO Segregated, our sugar is certified REDcert2 and we can offer UTZ (hazelnuts, cocoa) and organic (hazelnuts, almonds, pistachios) certifications. To reach the 100% target, we work with the tool Farm Sustainable Assessment (FSA) from the Sustainable Agriculture Initiative (SAI) which gives a picture of the sustainability level of the farm. It enables to assess the practices of a farm in relation to different topics such as water usage, fertilization, crop protection, safety, etc. At La Morella Nuts, we target our European suppliers to reach a “silver” level.
2. Thriving Nature
In parallel, when we spot opportunities to have a positive impact on the environment while purchasing sustainable ingredients, we engage with suppliers and external experts to design projects and have a direct impact on the ground. For example, we are developing a project to optimize water usage in hazelnuts fields ; another one to improve biodiversity in almond orchards.
Note: the majority of our nuts come from Spain. By purchasing locally, we limit the transportation of our raw materials and our carbon footprint. Buying locally is not only good for the planet but also for the freshness of our products and for the local economy.
3. Zero Child Labor
Part of the hazelnuts we use come from Turkey, where we work with suppliers who do not recruit or engage the use of child labour.
Sustainable production
In our factory, in Reus, we use 100% renewable electricity. In addition, we keep on reducing our energy usage with more efficient equipment or techniques. For example, we re-use the heat emitted during the production process to warm up cleaning water.
We also work on waste reduction and valorization. We sort out plastic, carton and organic waste such as nuts skin, and work with other companies which can give them a second life.
