Carbon footprint

You can’t manage it if you don’t measure it! We measured our organizational carbon footprint based on 14/15 figures and can readily see our areas of greatest impact.

Our comprehensive footprint tool will enable us to measure and report on our impacts every year, in order to achieve our Forever Chocolate commitment to become carbon and forest positive by 2025.

As you can see in the following graph of our footprint (2014/15), land use change is by far our biggest impact - this is related to the land converted from previously forested space to the farmland used today to deliver our agricultural raw materials. You can also see above, that our second biggest impact comes from dairy. So we will work with our suppliers in order to ensure that carbon reducing practices are part of their sustainability plans.

A way in which customers can get involved is by first, understanding the carbon footprint of their purchases, and also making conscious efforts to reduce their downstream impacts. Through our online carbon footprint tool, you can input your recipe to see the impact of your chocolate, and see how it compares to Barry Callebaut’s choice range, and also how it compares to other food items.

Change around your recipe to see how slight tweaks could positively or negatively impact your footprint. And let us know if you’d like to explore options that enhance taste while reducing impact. Our R&D experts will be happy to assist you!
