Cocoa is primarily grown by smallholder farmers in remote equatorial regions. Most of the world’s cocoa supply comes from West Africa, a region that faces some of the most critical sustainability challenges in the industry. Among them:

• farmer poverty and yield decrease
• ageing farms and depleted soil
• the unpredictable effects of climate change
• a lack of financing options to invest in productivity activities.

Many cocoa communities lack essential infrastructure and services such as schools, literacy programs, vocational training, and access to clean water and basic healthcare. Additionally, gender inequality hinders the sustainability of these communities, as women often have limited opportunities to develop skills and generate income.
