Great taste starts with great hazelnuts
The hazel tree originates from Asia. The Greeks and the Romans spread it through Europe, where it has been cultivated until today.
The estimated world production in shell (International Nut Council) for the crop 18/19 reached 970’000 metric tons of hazelnuts. Turkey is the biggest producer with 59% of the world production, followed by Italy (125’000MT). Spain accounts for 16’000MT.
La Morella Nuts is located in Reus, in the middle of the main hazelnut producing region in Spain. Did you know that La Morella is the name of the wind that blows through the beautiful hazelnut orchards in the region of Reus.
We source a majority of our hazelnuts locally, through long-standing relationships with local cooperatives. Depending on specific product characteristics, we also source hazelnuts from Italy and Turkey. Being located so close to the Spanish hazelnut orchards, we possess unique sourcing expertise and also know where to source the best hazelnuts around the world.
How are hazelnuts grown?
The hazelnut growing period goes from February to September. Mid-winter, hazelnut trees are in bloom and the wind acts as pollinator: it brushes past male flowers (called catkins) and disseminatess their pollen to the stigma of small female flowers. Those eventually develop delicious hazelnuts, which are picked in September with the utmost care and speed to preserve their exceptional quality and flavor.
